It's an Interesting Place: An Afternoon With Bruce McMillan

The Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society invites the public to a special presentation by acclaimed Maine author, photographer, and artist Bruce McMillan.

During the interactive talk, McMillan, who’s written dozens of children’s books including The Remarkable Runaway Riderless Tricycle, will share insights into his creative process, demonstrating how the people, landscapes, and unique character of Shapleigh and surrounding Maine towns served as the primary inspiration for his work. Attendees will discover how local places and familiar hometown faces were woven directly into his award-winning books, photography projects, and fine art paintings.

"He takes ‘keep it local’ to a different level," says the Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society. "Bruce McMillan has a rare ability to create entertaining and informative works utilizing local people and places. We are thrilled to offer our neighbors a chance to see our community through his artistic lens."

A brief Q&A session and will follow the main presentation, giving attendees an opportunity to speak directly with the author.

Cost: Free and open to the public, with plenty of parking and handicapped accessible facility

About Bruce McMillan

Born in Boston but raised in Maine, Bruce McMillan is an award-winning photo-essayist, author, and artist best known for his children’s books. When not writing or photographing he would visit schools inspiring children to become authors. Recently, he’s set down his pen and taken up a paintbrush, creating many watercolors of various topics. And although he’s been all over the country and around the world, Bruce calls Shapleigh home, using the town’s people and places as inspiration for his works.
