Great East Canal

Construction on the Great East Canal started in 1850 but was delayed because of the Civil War - and finished in the 1860's. The most interesting feature of the canal is there is no cement or mortar used in either the archway (which supports the road) or the canal itself. The canal is three-quarters of a mile long, 13 feet wide and 16 feet deep and is the boundary line between Maine and New Hampshire.
